March 2009 Oklahoma Bankruptcy Filings Increase 39%

Oklahoma bankruptcy filings in March 2009 soared 39 percent from the number of cases filed one year earlier in March 2008. The March 2009 filings were also up 31 percent from the February 2009 numbers.

Here is the breakdown for Oklahoma’s three bankruptcy districts:

  1. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, located in Okmulgee, saw a 20 percent increase in cases for the month of March 2009 compared to March 2008. The Eastern District’s March case total exceeded February’s numbers by 18.7 percent.
  2. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Oklahoma, located in Tulsa, saw a 35.5 percent increase in cases for the month of March 2009 compared to March 2008. The Northern District’s March case total exceeded February’s numbers by 19.8 percent.
  3. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Oklahoma, located in Oklahoma City, experienced both the greatest percentage rise in cases between March 2009 and March 2008, 48 percent, and the highest percentage increase in cases from February 2009 to March 2009, 42 percent.
