Record Number of Oklahomans Receiving Food Stamps

by Dan Nunley

More Oklahomans are receiving food stamps than at any other time in state history according to the Oklahoma Department of Human Services.

In February, 444,184 Oklahomans received food stamps, which is 2,000 more than in the previous month. The increase is a 6.4 percent jump compared with February 2008, when 417,624 Oklahomans received food stamps.

Food stamps are provided in a federal program meant as a supplement to a family’s budget. The average benefit is $3 per person per day. Eligibility for food stamps is based on 130 percent of the federal poverty level. For a family of three to participate in the program, the monthly income cannot exceed about $1,900.
